Tyler Gladwell will return to the sideline as new head coach of the Layton High Lancers. After 13 years as Layton’s head coach, Jim Batchelor has stepped down and left the school to become an administrator in the district.

As a senior co-captain, point guard Kaitlyn Viator is expected to take charge of things for Layton this year — and it was a charge she took in the lane midway through the first quarter that sparked the Lancers to an 18-8 run over the rest of the half Tuesday.

As season openers go, Fremont took care of business against a worthy opponent from a smaller school Tuesday. Dallin Hall scored 21 points and the Silver Wolves used timely shots in the second quarter to slowly creep away from defending 3A champion Ridgeline (now in 4A) for a 74-62 victory.
